Development of Open-Set Word Recognition in Children: Speech-Shaped Noise and Two-Talker Speech Maskers.
OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to establish the developmental trajectories for children's open-set recognition of monosyllabic words in each of two maskers: two-talker speech and speech-shaped noise. DESIGN Listeners were 56 children (5 to 16 years) and 16 adults, all with normal hearing. Thresholds for 50% correct recognition of monosyllabic words were measured in a two-talker speech o...
متن کاملRecognizing spoken vowels in multi-talker babble: spectral and visual speech cues
It has been proposed that both spectral and visual speech cues assist in segregating a talker from noise. To test how these cues interact, the experiment examined vowel identification (in hVd context) when presented in multi-talker babble. The availability of spectral cues was manipulated by filtering the signal into (1) 8 frequency amplitude-envelope bands or (2) the same bands with additional...
متن کاملAuditory-Visual Integration of Talker Gender in Cantonese Tone Perception
This study investigated the auditory-visual integration of talker gender in the perception of tone variances. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate how listeners use the information of talker gender to adjust their expectation towards speakers’ pitch range and uncover intended tonal targets in Cantonese tone perception. Results from an audio-only tone identification task showed that tone c...
متن کاملTone hyperarticulation in Cantonese infant-directed speech
There is extensive evidence for vowel hyperarticulation in infant-directed speech (IDS) [1, 2, 3], but little is known about lexical tones in tonal IDS. Here, longitudinal recordings of Cantonese IDS revealed that tones, like vowels, are hyperarticulated. Implications of this finding for infant linguistic development are discussed.
متن کاملSpeech intelligibility in cochlear implant simulations: Effects of carrier type, interfering noise, and subject experience.
Channel vocoders using either tone or band-limited noise carriers have been used in experiments to simulate cochlear implant processing in normal-hearing listeners. Previous results from these experiments have suggested that the two vocoder types produce speech of nearly equal intelligibility in quiet conditions. The purpose of this study was to further compare the performance of tone and noise...
